Laptop Backup

Submitted by jkupka on Wed, 10/01/2008 - 10:46am.

Hello All,

I was looking for some information on what others are using
for laptop backup practices. Currently we have been using NTBackup and
scheduling a task for when laptops are in the building to backup data and
occasionally a full system backup. With the onset of Windows Vista and it’s
new backup it appears time to change courses to something that still allows the
picking and choosing of what to backup. As a side note we are backing up the
files to a network share when the laptop is in the office.

Any comments on what is good, bad experiences or just any
info is appreciated.

Thanks,

Jeremy.

Kevin, which of the Altiris suite are/were you using for that? We use Deployment Server for imaging…but I don’t know how it’d handle backups.

Greetings, All,

We’ve been using Altiris to back up laptops for a few years, but the support burden has grown to the point where we have decided to outsource this service. We just finalized our contract with EMC for Mozy Enterprise and are phasing out Altiris.

We are eagerly awaiting the Mac client for Mozy Enterprise – the number of faculty using Macs has been on the rise recently, though it is not yet a big deal and most of our mac users are comfortable using Apple’s MobileMe or other service to back their own data up.

We’re looking at a contract with Mozy.  The central university is planning to scale up personal drive shares … (I’d love to get out of the business of maintaining a large file server service)  BUT it may be some time before they acquire the drive space.  Especially now with the markets in serious flux.  So we’ll have to continue to find our own solutions for now.

Mozy looks like it will cost less than $300/mo to get basic coverage for all our faculty.  While our onsite backup system is pretty good, I’d prefer to transfer some/all risk to folks who do backups (and restores) all day every day.  This should help free up our smart people to do more innovative fun stuff that has more direct correlation to our educational mission.  Like a lot of us, I’m doing my best to get out of the business of running services that someone else can run … it’s been a five or six year process but we’re finally seeing some progress here.  We’ll keep a few servers but mostly for sandboxes and cool stuff.

Sorry to be so loquacious … had an amazing lunch and am still recovering.

Jeremy,
More questions than answers here…
Do you put your laptops in your domain (if you’re running something like AD, which I assume you are)?
Do you redirect the My Documents to a network share?
At this point, we have our laptops in the domain and encourage everyone to use their file share in the building, but when they are off campus, they are responsible for backing up their own data. Not the best tactic, I’m sure.
Thanks
Cyndi
