On another topic...oh wait...it's still exams

So,
this is our first year using Exam4. I’m pleased to report that we’ve
had almost no problems with it thus far (but of course, exams just started this
week and while we had 1L practice exams, we had just a couple midterms). The
biggest problem we’ve had is really not an Exam4 issue; we use a secure
wireless connection to upload and have the students connect and authenticate
prior to the exam but half the time, the authentication (not the connection)
isn’t restored for electronic submittal. Easy fix…they exit Exam4,
re-authenticate, then get back into the s’ware and submit the exam. It’s
far more problematic on Macs; most of the time they have to turn off their Airport,
get on the open wireless, then reconnect on the secure wireless. I’m
hoping to figure out how to use the open wireless for next semester.

We
also had several students who did not download the new version after midterms
and were dismayed to find out the day of the exam that the software had
expired. Our previous software was good for the entire academic year, and even
though I sent no less than 4 emails stating that they must reinstall, some of
them just don’t pay attention. In that case, we made them write that exam
in blue books and told them to download the current version for next time.

Other
than that, we’ve been problem free…knock on wood…

How is your wireless secured? A long time ago we simply promoted them with a web page to logon before granting access to the internet. That worked well because network management did let us punch a hole to access to one port on one IP so exams could be submitted pre-authentication.  Now its 802.1x authentication on WPA-enterprise and if you’re not authenticated you’re not even associated with the network. On the bright side, it saves credentials and once working is pretty solid and persists through reboots and everything, so it hasn’t been a problem.

Well, I’m chair of the campus-wide wireless committee and so far, they won’t budge on changing the secured wireless. I can use another port in Exam4 but the only ports open on the unsecured wireless are 80 and 443…

Check with your wireless support to see if they can add your exam4 server as a walled garden (allow un auth access to exam4 server)
