On another topic...oh wait...it's still exams

So,
this is our first year using Exam4. I’m pleased to report that we’ve
had almost no problems with it thus far (but of course, exams just started this
week and while we had 1L practice exams, we had just a couple midterms). The
biggest problem we’ve had is really not an Exam4 issue; we use a secure
wireless connection to upload and have the students connect and authenticate
prior to the exam but half the time, the authentication (not the connection)
isn’t restored for electronic submittal. Easy fix…they exit Exam4,
re-authenticate, then get back into the s’ware and submit the exam. It’s
far more problematic on Macs; most of the time they have to turn off their Airport,
get on the open wireless, then reconnect on the secure wireless. I’m
hoping to figure out how to use the open wireless for next semester.

We
also had several students who did not download the new version after midterms
and were dismayed to find out the day of the exam that the software had
expired. Our previous software was good for the entire academic year, and even
though I sent no less than 4 emails stating that they must reinstall, some of
them just don’t pay attention. In that case, we made them write that exam
in blue books and told them to download the current version for next time.

Other
than that, we’ve been problem free…knock on wood…

Yes it definitely sounds similar to what that article mentions.  Thanks for the heads up on the last paragraph.  We have had an issue this past year with only Apples where they lose connectivity to the wireless network and end up on a cisco exception table.  Our university network guys have to remove them each time another apple user ends up on there (then they have network access again once removed from the exception list).  I am still trying to get them to resolve the issue.  Can I get in touch with you next week to discuss this to see if there is a solution?

We are having a huge amount of problems with this upgrade.  At first we had a hand full of students that could not connect to our Cisco Aeronet APs, then as the semester progressed, more and more students with the Apples could not access the wireless network.  Now it is just about all of them.

Apple denies the problem, but if you insert a USB wireless card in an Apple laptop, it will connect, leading one to believe that there is a problem with the drivers for the Airport cards.

We are in the process of upgrading our wireless to a controller-less based system, like Aerohive.  In the process of demoing different wireless network providers, we have found that there are no issues connecting to newer APs, it seems that the old Cisco APs are problematic.

Have you tried to see if it might be an issue with some of the MAC users upgrading to the OS X update that Ken just mentioned in a previous posting.

There has been some reports of Airport issues after running the update.

We are also experiencing a significant number of electronic submission failures over wireless, primarily with Mac’s but not exclusively.  During troubleshooting it has been hit-or-miss using combinations of resetting connections, rebooting, re-authenticating, etc.  Getting to the cause of this problem would definitely make life easier for the next round of testing.

Cyndi,

I have had some issues with submitting electronically but far fewer than yours. It's more common in MACs since the airport needs at least 30 seconds to re-connect ,on some PCs  they need to login again to re-authenticate to ACS through AD.  I can't find a fixed pattern and would be happy to find out what's causing this, perhaps Greg can help figure this out.
