LII launches free lawyer-directory service

After more than a year of work, most of it done by our partners and
friends at Justia.com, the LII is launching a free lawyer directory
service. You can find it at http://lawyers.law.cornell.edu . Justia's
version of the directory contains a listing for every American lawyer we
were able to identify through bar-association rosters and the like. Our
version contains only those lawyers who have authenticated themselves by
registering a profile with Justia (well, actually, we made two
exceptions to that -- you can see them at http://tinyurl.com/88887h).

We think it's a triple-win: it provides a useful service to those in our
audience who are seeking attorneys, it provides attorneys with a new way
to reach potential clients, and it provides us with ongoing support for
our activities. This latter is obviously important to us --
increasingly so in these times.

You may be wondering how a free service can provide us with income.
It's a good trick ;-). A full description of the lawyer directory
service is on our announce-blog at http://blog.law.cornell.edu. More
general musings on the problem of sustaining free-to-air access to legal
materials are in my blog at
http://blog.law.cornell.edu/tbruce/2009/01/14/sustainability/

I hope that you'll help us by spreading this announcement broadly --
especially to your contacts in the world of law practice. It offers
lawyers a chance to do well by doing good, and us a means of support for
new and innovative free services. So forward, blog, and tweet widely.

All the best,
Tb.
